    Review of cargo handling in Klaipėda Port, Būtingė Terminal and other ports of Baltic Sea Eastern Coast in Jan-Oct’14

    This October, Klaipėda Port cargo turnover has grown by 24.3 %: total of 3,652.8 thousand tons (including LNG – 48.6 thousand tons) were handled, i.e. 713.6 thousand tons more than in October 2013, Klaipėda Port says in its press release.

    This is an absolute one month cargo handling operations record in the history of Klaipėda Port. Previous record was documented in October 2011 and amounted to 3,298.2 thousand tons.

    In the period January to October 2014, Klaipėda Port’s cargo turnover has increased by 7.3%: total of 30.1 million tons handled, i.e. 2.0 million tons more than during the same period last year.

    Such growth in Klaipėda Port’s handling volumes was mostly conditioned by a 42.7 % growth in fertilizers handling operations: total of 10.2 thousand tons handled or 3.0 thousand tons more than in January to October 2013.

    Other cargos that conditioned the handling volumes in January to October 2014:

    - containerized cargo – 4,656.0 thousand tons handled, i.e. +21.9 % or +836.5 thousand tons;

    - agricultural products – 2,658.3 thousand tons handled (including grain – 2,135.4 thousand tons, +26.2 %), i.e. +7.7 % or +190.3 thousand tons;

    - ore – 984.5 thousand tons handled, i.e. +23.4 % or +186.4 thousand tons.

    The amount of bulk goods accounting for 48 % of cargo handling volume in Klaipėda Port, in January to October 2014 was growing rapidly – 14.3 million tons handled, which is 23.2 % or 2.3 million tons more than in January to October 2013.

    Volume of main cargo:

    - bulk fertilizers – 8,787.0 thousand tons handled, +56.3 % or +3,165.5 thousand tons;

    - agricultural products – 2,658.3 thousand tons handled (including grain – 2,135.4 thousand tons, +26.2%), i.e. +7.7 % or +190.3 thousand tons;

    - ore – 984.5 thousand tons handled, +23.4 % or +186.4 thousand tons;

    - scrap metal – 418.1 thousand tons handled, +69.4 % or +171.3 thousand tons.

    Liquefied cargo handling accounting for 20 % cargo handling volume in the port, in  January to October 2014, comparing with the same period last year, decreased noticeably – total volume of liquefied cargo amounted to 6.2 million tons (the change made -19.7 % or -1.5 million tons).

    Volume of main cargo:

    - oil products – 4,848.4 thousand tons handled, 22.3 % or 1,390.2 thousand tons less;

    - liquefied fertilizers (974,8 thousand tons handled, 14.6 % or 166.4 thousand tons);

    General cargo accounting for 32% of cargo handling volume in Klaipėda Port, in January to October 2014 have grown by 7.4 % or 658.0 thousand tons – 9.6 million tons handled.

    Volume of main cargo:

    - containerized cargo – 4,656.0 thousand tons handled, +21.9 % or +836.5 thousand tons;

    - ro-ro cargos – 3,678.2 thousand tons handled, 6.0 % or 233.0 thousand tons less;

    - packed fertilizers – 406,4 thousand tons handled, +12.5 % or +45.2 thousand tons.

    In January to October 2014, Klaipėda Port and Būtingė Terminal was visited by 5,687 vessels, including 59 vessels that moored in Būtingė Terminal and 5,628 vessels that moored in Klaipėda Port (1.3 % or 77 vessels less comparing with January to October 2013).

    During the analyzed period, 313,276 passengers have visited, i.e. 23.7 % or 60,003 passengers more than in January to October 2013.

    Cruise navigation. In October 2014, the cruise season in Klaipėda Port was finished with a record. In January to October 2014, Klaipėda was visited as much as 57,797 passengers, which is an absolute record in the history of Klaipėda Port (growth of as much as 76.4 % or 25,040 passengers more than in 2013). 63 cruise vessels have moored, i.e. 57.5 % or 23 vessels more than in 2013.

    It is worth to also note the record 317 m long cruise giant Celebrity Eclipse that has visited Klaipėda in June 2014.
