    JN Port celebrates 23rd Anniversary

    Jawaharlal Nehru Port Trust (JNPT), India's most modern and efficient Port, celebrated its 23rd Anniversary on 13th June, 2012 in Mumbai at Hotel Taj Palace in a function organized by the port to honour the top performers at the port, Daily Shipping Times reports.

    The Top Performers were felicitated by Mr.L.Radhakrishnan IAS, Chairman, JNPT, Mr.N.N. Kumar, Deputy Chairman, JNPT & other Past Chairman of JNP.

    Ms. Anna R. Malhotra the first Chairperson of JN Port in 1989 was felicitated by the Chairman Mr. L. Radhakrishnan as a Special felicitation during the function in the evening.

    Mr. L. Radhakrishnan, IAS, Chairman, JNP while addressing the invitees, highlighted the performance of JN Port. He welcomed each and every one who were present on the Port’s 23rd Anniversary Celebrations. He said that JNP will grow more and more bigger in the years to come. He thanked the Port Users and Export-Import community for its continuous support to the port. He expressed his confidence that the port will take every initiative to offer the best of services. Highlighting the port's performance the Chairman said, last year was a challenging year for JNPT. Our own Container Terminal has broken records and we will continue to perform the same.

    He further spoke, JN Port handled 65.75 million tonnes of total cargo during the financial year 2011-12, which is an all-time record for JNPT. The containerized cargo was 58.25 million tonnes and liquid cargo was 6.66 million tonnes and remaining 0.84 million tonnes of dry bulk and break bulk.

    Mr. Radhakrishnan also added, JN Port handled 4.32 million TEUs of Container Traffic during the financial year 2011-12. Out of the total traffic of 4.32 million TEUs, the share of JNPCT was 1.03 million TEUs, the share of NSICT was 1.40 million TEUs and remaining 1.89 million TEUs were contributed by M/s. APM Terminals, Mumbai (APMT).

    JN Port remains largest and the first  among all the major ports in India in container handling with the market share of  55.63%. JNPT is the Biggest Port in India. We are the Greenest Port in the World, Chairman said. He also briefed about port's operational, financial performance and future development plans of JNPT. The port registered record profit of nearly Rs.900 crore.

    Mr. L. Radhakrishnan also stated that steps are underway to develop additional capacity to match the demand  from trade by developing the 4th Container terminal of 4.8 million TEUs capacity and  330 meter quay extension of  0.8 million TEUs capacity. A second phase  dredging project for deepening the channel up to 17 meter to accommodate new generation vessels is being prepared  by TCE and Ernst and Young  jointly, SEZ of  267 ha. of area is being developed for first phase of land development, the 5th Mega container terminal at Nhava of additional 10 million TEUs capacity is being designed  by M/s  Scott Wilson, an  additional liquid handling capacity of around four times will be result which is being designed  by L&T  Ramboll. Additional bulk/break bulk berths with modern facilities, captive berths, logistic parks and green initiatives for non-conventional energy and water conservation are other projects in the pipeline. He also noted the commendable support of JNPT’s staff, who are driving force behind the Port’s success.

    The Deputy Chairman, Mr. N.N.Kumar in his concluding remarks expressed gratitude for the support from port customers, terminal operators, employees, trade and other stake holders for the success of all JNPT's  activities.

    The function welcomed a gathering from the shipping fraternity including the former Chairman of JNPT, Mr. S.S. Hussain, Mr. M. P. Pinto & Mr. Ravi Budhiraja, Mr. K. Nalinakshan, Ms. Maya Sinha, Ex. Dy. Chairperson, JNPT, Mr. D.T. Joseph, Ex. Shipping Secretary, Mr. Nailesh Gandhi, BCHAA President, Mr. Ashish Pednekar, MACCIA President, Shipping Lines personnel and JNPT officials were present to grace the occasion.
