Review of Black Sea container market in HI’2016
In HI’2016, Black Sea container terminals of Romania, Ukraine, Russia, Georgia and Bulgaria handled 1,222,326 TEUs, including empty containers and excluding transshipment.
The review covers only loaded containers – 878,712 TEUs which is a 5.50-pct decrease against HI’2015.

The growth of container throughput was shown by all countries of the Black Sea region except for Georgia and Bulgaria. The terminals of Ukraine, Russia and Georgia demonstrated a growth of 25.11%, 7.82% and 3.6% accordingly while container throughput of Georgia and Bulgaria fell by 24.32% and 0.03% accordingly.

Imports account for 51.20% of containers handled in the region in HI’2016, exports – 48.80%. Loaded/empty containers ratio in the region is 71.89% / 28.11%.
As compared with HI’2015, exports of loaded containers in the Black Sea region climbed by 12.35%. Georgia showed the steepest fall - 22.31%. The growth was demonstrated by Russia and Ukraine, their exports volumes grew by 42.74% and 26.38%. As for imports into the region, it dropped by 0.29% mostly due to reduced imports to Georgia (-24.71%). Ukraine, Romania and Bulgaria showed imports growth of 23.54%. 16.92% and 4.10% accordingly, while imports to Russia fell by 8%.
Handling of loaded containers in the reported period per country is as follows: Ukraine – 28.70%, Russia – 26.55%, Romania – 25.20%, Georgia – 10.41%, Bulgaria – 9.14%.

As for total container throughput, the list of top five container terminal changed with DPW (Constanta) having retained its leading position, HPC Ukraine (Odessa) rising from the 4th to the 3rd position, APMT Poti (Georgia) moving from the 2nd to the 4th position, Novoroslesexport (Russia) climbing from the 3rd to the 2nd position and NUTEP (Russia) retaining its 5th position. Four of the top five terminals of the region demonstrated the growth of container throughput. Container throughput of APMT Poti (Georgia) fell by 26.88%.

As for operators of Black Sea lines, the list of leaders has changed. It includes Maersk Line, MSC, CMA CGM, ARKAS and ZIM. Maersk Line has taken the leading position having pushed MSC to the second place. The above lines control 74.57% of the market of loaded containers in the Black Sea region.
The service of G6 (Hapag Lloyd, OOCL, MOL, NYK, HMM, APL) was reorganized from the middle of 2014. OOCL moved to ZIM and G6 alliance became G5. In HI’2015, G5 members controlled 5.66% of the market, in HI’2016 – their share declined to 4.94%. The share of OOCL grew from 1.81% in HI’2015 to 1.90% in HI’2016.
The first quarter of 2015 saw the beginning of joint activities of 2М (Maersk and MSC) and Ocean Three (CMA CGM, CSCL, UASC) alliances. Total share of MAERSK and MSC in the market decreased by 0.92 p.p. from 45.19% in HI’2015 to 45.19% in HI’2016. The share of Ocean Three increased by 1.26 p.p. from 15.52% in HI’2015 to 16.78% in HI’2016.

It also should be noted that Black Sea container market saw certain changes in 2015. WHL and KLINE terminated their activities in the region while CSAV merged with Hapag Lloyd, hence the decrease of CSAV results in this market. A new company entered the market – TURKON Line – it has strong positions at Mediterranean – North America route. Having entered this market in partnership with Admiral Container Line, TURKON Line occupied 0.22% of the market of loaded containers in HI’2016 and has quite good growth prospects.
