Approach channel to Chernomorsk seaport (Ukraine) will be 16 metres deep

The USPA (Ukrainian Sea Ports Authority) says it is starting a public bidding for dredging of the approach channel of the Chernomorsk seaport tothe level of 16 m.

The works will be completed in 2017, their estimated value is 110.12 million UAH (VAT included). The total volume of dredging, according to the project, will be 504.4 thousand m3, the area – 25.6 hectares.

«We continue to purposefully modernize and strengthen our ports. After three signed contracts on the reconstruction of the channel and water area in Yuzhny port, the USPA branch in Chernomorsk should start similar projects.Today, freight turnover and the number of calls are growing. The hydraulic engineering works initiated in the port will contribute to further dynamics,» said Raivis Veckagans, the Head of the USPA.

According to him, the USPA charges Chernomorsk port with the implementation of two projects: «In addition to dredging of the approach channel, the operational water area of the first bucket of the Dry Estuary will soon be reconstructed. The tenders for both projects will be traditionally open and transparent, involving companies from Ukraine and from around the world, through the Prozorro system. So we get the best offer on the price / quality ratio, saving funds and allocating them to new projects.»

Public bidding will be conducted in two stages: the first stage is the provision of technical documentation, the second one is the auction. The deadline for submitting bids through the Prozorro system for technical requirements is July 31, 2017, the auction is scheduled for September 5.

For reminder, the issue of reconstruction of the approach sea channel in Chernomorsk port, the USPA discussed at the Port Council «Chernomorsk» with representatives of city authorities, port operators and trade unions;the port community and the public supported this initiative. The USPA has already signed a memorandum of cooperation with the port operator «Risoil» and the agricultural holding «Kernel» in order to increase the volume of traffic in Chernomorsk seaport while increasing the level of depth.

The construction of the approach channel to the water area of the cargo area of Odessa port in the Dry Estuary (now — Chernomorsk seaport) has began in the late fifties of the last century on a technical project developed by the profile research institute ChernomorNIIproject.Initially, the approach channel was designed with the width of 60 m, the depth of 8.25 m and the length of 780 m. Then, as a result of operational dredging, the channel parameters changed, and today the channel depth is 14.5 m, width is 150 m, and the length is 1.4 km.Now, in connection with the increasing share in the vessel's turnover of the port of large-capacity vessels with a draft of more than 14 m, these parameters no longer ensure the safety of passage of vessels through the channel to the port, and its reconstruction is necessary.

According to the results of work in 2016 cargo turnover of Chernomorsk seaport amounted to 15 million 942 thousand tons. The best results of the year were achieved in grain processing — 7 million 986 thousand tons (an increase of 56.9% to the level of 2015).

Based on the results of dredging, the increase in cargo turnover is expected due to the growth in the volume of transshipment of bulk cargo, grain and container cargo, which are transported mainly in large-capacity vessels.The prospective vessel turnover will amount to 3,5 thousand units.per year.At the same time, the tendency of increasing the share of large-capacity vessels in the vessel's port turnover will continue.
