Gas Fuelled Ships Conference to be held in Hamburg, Nov. 16-18

The 7th International Gas Fuelled Ships Conference (Motorship) is slated to be held November 16-18 2016 in Hamburg, Germany. Venue: the Grand Elysee Hotel. This year’s conference boasts DNV GL as the gold sponsor and will include more than 30 presentations from prominent speakers who are experts in their fields, the event organizer said in a press release.

Among the 30 presentations to be given, there will be 10 case studies involving operators, designers and shipyards, which will inform participants on landmark LNG, methanol and other low-flashpoint fuelled projects around the world in the commercial shipping sector.

With a focus on knowledge sharing from a variety of projects, speakers will examine the latest advances in vessel design and operation, propulsion, supply infrastructure and associated technology.  Delegates will benefit from the opportunity not only to be updated on these latest technical developments but will also be able to interact and network with speakers throughout the two days of the conference.

The many experts speaking at this year’s conference include:

    • Markku Kajosaari, SVP Sales, Arctech Helsinki Shipyard and Mika Hovilainen, Aker Arctic Technology: World’s first LNG-powered icebreaker
    • Paul Melles, Managing Director Rederij Doeksen; Mark Schiller, CEO, Strategic Marine; Peter Friedl, Senior Expert Product Management Mobile Gas Engines, Rolls-Royce Powersystems: The first LNG fuelled ferries for the Dutch World Heritage Waddenzee
    • René Sejer Laursen, Mechanical Engineer, M.Sc., MAN Diesel & Turbo and Michel Hamrouni, Methanex: Methanol as marine fuel: a competitive option for ships operating in SECA
    • Konstantinos Fakiolas, Ship Design, Deltamarin and Antonis Trakakis, Technical Director, Arista Shipping: Project Forward – the future of LNG-powered bulk carrier design
    • Mike Simpson, Director, Marine Design Consultancy, Houlder and Liam Campbell, Managing Director, Ferguson Marine: Innovation and design challenges for UK’s first dual-fuel ferries
    • Thomas Myhre, Sales Manager, NSK Ship Design: Optimising LNG propulsion in a container vessel
    • Simon Provoost, Product Director, Inland Waterway Transport, Damen Shipyards: Ecoliner: The greenest inland shipping vessel in Europe

Other highlights of this year’s conference programme include a live interview with the Chairman of SEA/LING, the multi-sector industry coalition created to accelerate the widespread adoption of LNG as a marine fuel. The MotorShip Editor, Gavin Lipsith, will be interviewing the Chairman, Peter Keller, who is also the Executive VP of TOTE Inc., live on stage at Gas Fuelled Ships 2016. Keller joined TOTE Inc. in February 2012 and has been leading the conversion of the company’s fleet to liquefied natural gas (LNG). He has extensive experience in port and terminal development, liner industry activities, labour relations, intermodal operations and supply chain economics and strategies.

Gas Fuelled Ships 2016 will continue the legacy of the previous six conferences with the continued support it receives from major players in the industry connected with shipping and the use of gas as a maritime fuel. Supporters include BIMCO, VDR, Maritime LNG Platform, Intermanager and GE Marine, who will be sponsoring this year’s conference dinner which offers the opportunity to continue discussions in a more informal setting at the end of day one.

As well as the conference dinner, participants will be invited to attend the welcome reception, hosted by Blohm & Voss on 15 November 2016 at the Hafen Klub and day three, 18 November, will see delegates participating in technical visits, which will include the MS Ostfriesland, a car and passenger ferry, that was retrofitted to run on LNG in 2015.

The Motorship’s Gas Fuelled Ships Conference is fast approaching and is a must attend event for industry professionals who are looking to gain valuable information on using LNG as a maritime fuel.
